Only upstream for a short section, but it is unexpected to meet that much water flowing down the road. Burst pipe judging by the equipment in attendance. That wasn’t the only Atkinson Street excitement though, a hundred metres up the hill I met a headphone wearing gent walking straight at me on the “bike only” path. Came to a stop, he nearly walked into me and then looked up, I…
The usual route down along the Djerring Trail to mid-Clayton, then north to the campus. Something afoot near the old – heritage protected – power station chimney, a hi-vic clad gent from some tree services company, and a little further on various signs hanging on trees saying “Tree Protection Zone”, so I wonder what’s underway. Will have to go past on the weekend and have a…
Temperature dipped down to just under 10°C for most of the ride along the creek, but something about the dampness of the air made it feel much colder, even through the winter gloves. I got home with a completely numb top joint of my middle finger, the joys of the mild Reynaud’s that affects my hands at times

Clear after all the rain yesterday, still cold, but bits of sunshine poking through. Lots of pools of water standing about, and mud all over the Djerring Trail where a truck ploughed up the grass alongside then the rain spread it everywhere
Had the entertainment of pacing a VLocity train a couple of hundred metres into, then out of Huntingdale station. I managed to sit almost perfectly…
Yay! Temperature in the double digits, the Garmin says 10°C, that’s a whole 2°C more than this morning. At least the sun was shining and it wasn’t raining, just some very large pools, lakes and puddles to negotiate – some you can get around, some you just have to ride through
Strangely enough, far fewer other cyclists out and about today. I didn’t see a single on of the…
The full raincoat, sandals, and slow down to plow through the larger lakes. One day bike paths will be built with camber, and drainage…
Turned off at Huntingdale Station and took the short route, it gets to work quicker, and avoids the largest of the lakes – installed by the LXRA in 2018 when they rebuilt the path and turned it into the Djerring Trail. There’s now a permanent…
I’ve been very slack and really haven’t ridden much at all since our holiday to the Northern Territory in late June, a few commutes, interrupted here and there by injuries or sickness. Time to go out for a couple of hours, an easy flat ride though, off to the end of the Djerring Trail for a visit to the Dandenong Showgrounds and back again. I did detour off into side streets of Noble…
Pre-breakfast ride up to the shops, two loaves for the weekend and fish for dinner. Home over the Hanover Street bridge to squeeze the ride up into a whole 2km or more

Very busy along Gardiner Road with traffic leaving Monash Uni and traffic entering the pub, complete with mobs of pedestrians blithely ignoring traffic and stepping straight in front of me. Dodg’em cars around the drivers parking on and driving across the bike path, then blissfully empty further down the hill and towards the creek
…so who forgot to charge the headlight on Tuesday after…
Hasn’t really warmed up at all this week, still cold and damp after the promise of spring last weekend. The kerbside rubbish dumping continues … Clayton’s collection is in about a month’s time

Overall, not much fun. Cold, damp, wet underfoot from earlier rains. At least it wasn’t actually raining. An update from this morning, there’s now onnly one bowling ball, the other one’s been taken

Surprisingly cold, especially after the weekend when we had a few slightly warmer days. Called in for a coffee as I entered campus and carried it one handed over to our building – one day I’ll drop it, but not today
Outside the coffee stop there was a pink women’s bike with a magnificent phone holder – in a matching pink plastic. It incorporated its own little “helmet”…
The temperature is a few degrees higher than the ride to work this morning, but with the darkness and the dampness along the creek it always feels colder. Some light misty rain to add to the overall enjoyment

I’ve recovered enough from a week of woe to jump back on the #fixie and ride off to work. Ho-hum, same route as always

Feels like the first decent ride I’ve had in quite a while, out for a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon. Sunny, almost warm, but a cool northerly blowing
Mostly inspired by staring at the #Squadrats map and colouring in a little of the map to my east. Along the way I managed to find some small parks and a set of apartment buildings that I’ve either never known about, or…
Here’s what I’m working on now, in no particular order, and mostly personal not professional. Inspired by a permanent desire to tinker with this site and the ideas in a few of the /now pages I’ve come across, see https://nownownow.com/about.
The challenge will be to keep it up to date – last reviewed or updated 2026-08-01 Sat,
Now now contemplating the inevitable end of my working…
To the bakery for bread, swordfish steaks for dinner, chicken for tomorrow. Home for breakfast. Bit chilly. I’d misplaced my Garmin so for the first time in ages used Strava on the phone, almost couldn’t remember how

I suspect the mum’s doing the school drop off, whoever did it used scissors and cut neatly, so I’m guessing it was premeditated and they’d seen them one time then came back to steal them
The weather was good and I was felling mostly recovered from the head-meets-concrete of the other day, so went out for a lazy loop down around Karkarook Lake, the gravelly Clarinda loop and back up through the parks of Clayton. Bald Hill Reserve and Namitjira park, frisbee golf and dog walkers respectively. An enjoyable hour out in the sun

Hunting further afield in a south-easterly direction, down to what I thought was a bakery in Huntingdale, only to discover that they’re only a cafe and have no loaves for sale. Back to Oakleigh, grab the breakfast bread and home

Yeah, a blow to the head yesterday and I’m not in the mood for a longer ride home. Took the shorter route, straight home along the North Road bike path

Uneventful? Yes, some days that is just what you want and just what you need. An uneventful commute with nobody trying to walk into me or drive into me, and where I didn’t manage further injure myself – unlike yesterday

Well that was stupid. Got down the end of the suburb and stopped to adjust my gloves because the cold wind was blowing up my sleeve. I’d managed to put one foot down in some slippery mud, but had the other up on the pedal. Foot shot out from under me, I did the splits and got tangled up in the bike, ended up smacking my eyebrow on the concrete path
A short outing on a wintery afternoon, straight out and back along the Djerring Trail to Clayton. Main reason for heading down here was the ten minute stop near Huntingdale to collect up some of the masses of plastic, clothes, car tyres and household rubbish dumped along the trail – reports to the council are ignored, but I’ve discovered that if it is “on the street” or “on…
A routine commute home, north up to the creek, downstream along Scotchmans Creek Trail, up and over the Atkinson Street hill and through the Oakleigh shops

Logistical failure, no bread for lunch. Ride to the bakery, back home, make lunch, ride to work
Paused at the site of yesterday evenings rubbish collection to grab a plastic bag and add another two bags of dumped clothing and rubbish to the pile. Might come down here one weekend with a grabby stick thing and a stack of sacks and really clean it up a bit
Oddly, I found a 1KG discus lying…
Usual creek commute, but a detour down through Oakleigh a block of the Djerring trail so that I could …
… exercise my virtuousness by finally picking up about a cubic metre of dumped crap and nitrous bottles that the council refuses to collect, putting it all in the handy large cardboard box that was also dumped, and shift it onto the end of Oxford Street so that hopefully they have no…
Clear wintery morning, not quite low enough to be uncomfortable, but close
Oh surprise surprise, the council brochure detailing the annual hard rubbish collection has come out, so half the residents of Clayton have immediately indulged in landfill-on-street, despite their collection not starting until the end of August and the council sternly, if toothlessly, warning people not to dump rubbish…
Assorted trails on a sunny Sunday afternoon, even saw a rakali splashing around in the glen iris wetlands. Lots of families out riding and walking, kidlets everywhere

The Saturday morning bakery ride, a little further afield than previously. I’d been past the Three Little Bakers earlier in the week and remembered from some decades ago when it was closer to where I lived and a weekly visit, so that was today’s choice. Up there along the Djerring Trail, home along Neerim and Willesden Roads

At a bit of a loss as to which local bakery to visit for the fresh Saturday morning bread now that VBC Bakery has closed, today I tried Red Poppy. Their bread is OK, but sometimes they seem just a bit annoying in trying to up-sell and add on mini charges for using cards or for needing a bag to put you bread in
