So, last weekend I spent Saturday morning cleaning my workshop. As I did, I found an extra shelf that wasn’t in use and I decided to make my book wall a little more dense. I shifted everything around and added a fifth level. I had an idea while working on it. Here’s a time-lapse I took and the note that I posted…

To re-iterate what I said in the note…

I now have an extra shelf that is in need of books. I would like to fill that shelf with self-published indie books. I’d like to buy at least one indie paperback each month. I’ll share what I add to the shelf as I go. Then, I’ll stare at the covers of my contemporaries’ novels while I sit next to the book wall & chew on my own stories.

The (Very) Official Rules:

1) Please comment below to recommend a good indie book with a cover you love. I’ll refer back to this article every month to find a book. (Fair warning: I’m a fantasy/sci-fi reader primarily, but I’m open to anything that’s well-written & has an inspiring cover. Of course, I can’t promise I’ll be able to add every book that is suggested.)

2) In the interest of spreading the love around, please do not nominate your own book. (The whole idea here is to celebrate our community a little.)

3) I’ll start adding books to the shelf as the ol’ budget allows.

^ Cool indie books go in the empty space ^

Because I like looking at books. And I like reading books. And like it or not, you all have become my community and I want to support that community. And because I know how good it feels to have someone buy and value your work (largely because many of you have already demonstrated that to me with my book. You know who you are!). And also because, in a perfect world we’d all have a gazillion book sales and two gazillion readers, but we’re stuck in this imperfect one where we pour ourselves onto the page and kill ourselves editing and struggle to market and shout at an internet that tells us to rush everything, etc., etc.

So, for now, let’s line our walls with each others’ best efforts in order to make enduring this imperfect reality a little more fun.

Rant complete. Keep fighting the good fight. And please send me your reco’s in the comments.
