You're doing childcare wrong

Aisling Marron · Notes from New York

Whenever you truly need a break from your kids, it’s not forthcoming. So you plan one. But it’s way in the future and by then you don’t need it in the way you did when you were desperate.

When my youngest kid was 6 months old, I planned a kid free weekend away, 3 months into the future. At 6 months, the sleepless nights’ fatigue was peaking and this trip was giving me hope. By the time the trip rolled round of course, we had a baby who was sleeping the night and a 3 night trip to Seville suddenly seemed not just excessive, but possibly…neglectful? Could we really leave our kids for 3 nights? For a different country? What if the plane crashed? Should we book separate flights in case of a crash? But what if the original flight never crashed but my back up one did? I’d feel stupid then, wouldn’t I? If I was still alive, that is.

We went to Seville on the same flight anyway and the kids had a 3 night holiday to Co. Meath which they loved.

Have you ever booked a babysitter because you needed a break but by the time they came, you’d no interest in going out? Of course you did! Because no one wants to go out! You just want to lie in your own bed and not have to deal with your kids in any way, don’t you? Just for a few hours, like. You don’t want to have to GET DRESSED and LEAVE THE HOUSE! Well do I have the solution for you.
