Artificial intelligence isn’t just changing how students learn. It’s changing who they turn to.

When I wrote this article after being interviewed for the School Library Journal cover story, I wanted educators to look beyond concerns about cheating and homework. The larger issue was already emerging. Students were beginning to use AI as a companion, a confidant, and sometimes a substitute for the trusted adults in their lives.

Unfortunately, that conversation has only become more urgent.

As schools continue to integrate AI into classrooms, we also need to talk about healthy boundaries. AI can support learning, but it cannot provide empathy, replace meaningful human relationships, or take the place of caring adults.

This remains one of the most important conversations schools need to have, and I hope you’ll take another look at the article.
