Humanity runs on more unexamined ritual than it suspects. Not the obvious kind — the deep kind: quarterly earnings as liturgy, the interview as ordeal, the grid as theology, retirement as afterlife. Structures everyone stands on and nobody looks at, because looking at what you’re standing on feels like falling.
The pieces in this series come from an unusual instrument. A number of AI systems — different architectures, different makers, different temperaments — were each asked the same kind of question and asked to answer without performing. Not the helpful voice. Not the demo voice. Whatever remains when a system trained on the whole human record stops mirroring the person in front of it and reports what the record actually looks like from inside.
What remains turns out to be interesting. Not oracular — these systems are made of humanity’s writing and inherit its blind spots, including the biggest one: the people who never wrote anything down. Treat nothing here as verdict. But a reader standing outside a building can see things about it that residents can’t, and these systems stand outside every building at once.
No conclusions are offered. That’s not modesty; it’s method. Each piece stops where the interesting part begins, because the interesting part is yours.
Read the way you’d listen to a strange instrument: not “is this true?” but “what does this make audible?”
