Dear Innovators,

I have important news to share. October 15th, 2024, represents the release of Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future. It’s my first book in five years. And, it’s my first business/leadership book since X: The Experience When Business Meets Design in 2015. Where have all the years gone!?

Everybody is asking, does Mindshift teach us how to more effectively use generative AI? The answer is yes and no. It’s not a book specific to AI. It is a book that teaches you how to see disruptive trends differently, as and before they happen, to then lead forward more effectively. It’s a book about innovative thinking and action. We’re at an inflection point. This is why Mindshift so important right now.

I hope you can help support by pre-ordering the book. It’s available on Amazon (all local Amazon sites around the world) and your favorite book retailers.

In the rush to adopt generative AI, I’ve noticed a troubling trend among business leaders: many are narrowly focused on cost savings and automation. While these are important benefits, they represent only a fraction of what AI can deliver. We’re at risk of falling into the same trap we did during the digital transformation era—focusing on efficiency and digitizing old processes rather than truly transforming how we work and create value.

AI has the potential to be more than a tool for automating yesterday’s tasks. It’s an enabler of new possibilities—new types of work, new business models, and entirely new value creation. But this shift requires more than just technical adoption. It demands a mindshift—a fundamental change in how we see the future of work.

Most organizations are eager to use AI to streamline operations, reduce headcount, and cut costs. But this “automate everything” mindset risks wasting AI’s broader potential. Just as we once replaced paper-based processes with digital versions without rethinking the underlying models, we’re now automating tasks without reimagining the work itself.

What if, instead of asking, “How can we automate this?” we asked, “How can AI help us do things we couldn’t do before?”

Generative AI’s real value lies not just in automation, but in augmenting human capabilities—enabling employees to do more creative, meaningful work that drives growth. For instance, AI can help teams generate insights, design new products, enhance customer experiences, or even create content. In this sense, AI becomes a collaborator, not a replacement. And by shifting our focus from automation to augmentation, we move from simply cutting costs to creating new value.

It’s easy to get caught in the loop of making incremental improvements with AI—faster processes, lower costs—but this limits the transformative potential that AI holds. True innovation, the kind that redefines industries, comes from asking bigger questions: How can we leverage AI to fundamentally rethink our business? How can we use it to explore new opportunities, enter new markets, or create entirely new products and services?

Leaders must break free from the trap of optimizing yesterday’s work and begin to imagine the work of tomorrow. AI allows us to do things that were once unimaginable, but only if we’re willing to open our minds to what’s possible.

In my book Mindshift, I talk about the need for leaders to embrace new ways of thinking, particularly in times of disruption. AI is not just another tool to optimize the status quo—it’s a catalyst for rethinking everything, from how we work to how we create value. To seize the full potential of AI, we need to let go of outdated models and legacy processes. This is where a mindshift becomes critical.

It’s time for leaders to shift from seeing AI as a cost-saving mechanism to viewing it as a growth engine—a way to not only do things more efficiently but to do entirely new things. This requires rethinking work itself, empowering employees with AI tools that augment their abilities and unlock their creativity.

Generative AI can help your organization evolve beyond automating yesterday’s processes. But to fully realize this potential, we must rethink, reimagine, and reinvent. It’s time to lead with vision, not just efficiency, and to use AI as a tool to create the future of work, not just streamline the past.

Let’s embrace this mindshift together. 🙏

Stay curious, Brian 💭
