There's some groundbreaking news in the world of spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment.

Onward Medical, a startup focusing on SCI therapy, recently made a major breakthrough. They helped a previously paraplegic man improve his walking using a brain-computer interface (BCI) and a "digital bridge" that connects the severed spinal cord.

“After only 5 min of calibration, the BSI supported continuous control over the activity of hip flexor muscles,” the Onward Medical team continued, “which enabled the participant to achieve a fivefold increase in muscle activity compared to attempts without the BSI” Unfortunately, those gains were wiped away as soon as the BCI was turned off, instantly losing the ability to step, they explained. “Walking resumed as soon as the BSI was turned back on.”

Here's the deal: Traditional therapies like Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) have been used for years to stimulate paralyzed muscles and restore some movement.

But let's be honest, the results were a bit clumsy, with shuffling gaits and awkward arm movements. That's where Onward's innovation comes in. They combined an implanted BCI with epidural electrical stimulation to create a Brain Spine Interface (BSI) system.

Scientists at McMaster University and MIT just made a super cool discovery using artificial intelligence (AI).

They found a new antibiotic called “abaucin” that could help fight a deadly and drug-resistant bacteria called Acinetobacter baumannii.

This bacteria is a real troublemaker in hospitals and can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and serious infections.

Now it’s a matter of widely adopting these methods to discover new antibiotics more efficiently and less expensively.”
