Europe shifting gears, AI Factory hiring and lots of events - the time before summer is as busy as always.
📺 AI Austria on TV
On May 22, AI Austria co-founder Clemens Wasner joined a high-profile panel hosted by our friends at AI Upper Austria, broadcast live on ORF On an Radio Oberösterreich, to debate one of the most urgent questions facing Europe: Can we secure our position in the global AI race, or are we already falling behind?
Moderated by Gerhard Kürner, the discussion brought together voices from across the innovation landscape, including Daniel Zawarczynski (WKÖ Außenwirtschaft Austria) and Andreas Schwarzenbrunner (Speedinvest). It was a rare public moment of consensus: Europe is strong in research, talent, and political stability, but hampered by risk aversion, fragmented markets, and heavy reliance on foreign infrastructure.
From the underutilization of private capital and the lack of sovereign data infrastructure to the slow pace of AI adoption in traditional industries, the panel didn’t shy away from structural criticism. Clemens Wasner emphasized the urgency of building European compute infrastructure, reducing dependence on U.S. tech giants, and fostering “patriotic” support for domestic AI startups. “Other regions would never let foreign companies handle their digital future the way Europe does,” he noted.
Zawadzinski highlighted the cultural mindset gap between Europe and the U.S., where speed, experimentation, and boldness often trump caution. Schwarzenbrunner pointed to the paradox of abundant capital stuck in low-risk assets like real estate, while scalable tech ventures struggle for funding.
The takeaway was clear: Europe’s AI future won’t be won with white papers alone. It will take political courage, strategic investment, and a continent-wide shift in attitude, from reactive to proactive. »rewatch the discussion here
