August is an implementation month. Austria is deciding not only how much AI it wants, but what infrastructure, rules, and local capability it wants it built on. As transparency duties begin and Kronstorf makes the physical costs of compute visible, the practical test is whether new capacity is open, useful, and accountable, not simply larger.

🌍 AAIC 2026: our place to turn AI conversations into next steps

On 24 September, AI Austria is bringing the AAIC Applied Artificial Intelligence Conference back to the WKÖ in Vienna. 🎙️ New AI Austria Podcast: cheap models can still make AI expensive

⚡ Kronstorf makes data-centre policy concrete

Google’s planned expansion has put energy, land, water, and regional benefit into the same conversation. The Bürger:inneninitiative Rechenzentrum Kronstorf has demonstrated for transparency and a fuller assessment of impacts: concerns that deserve a serious answer. 🏢 Vienna steps back from EU AI Gigafactory - charts its own course

Vienna has withdrawn from the European AI Gigafactory competition after the EU shifted from a public-private partnership model to a joint procurement approach that didn't align with the city's plans - including feeding datacenter waste heat into the district heating network for hundreds of thousands of households. Rather than waiting on Brussels, Wirtschaftsstadträtin Barbara Novak has signalled that Vienna is ready to build its AI compute infrastructure independently, with power grid and heating preparations already underway. 🗣️ Digital sovereignty is becoming an organised Austrian debate

The new Initiative Digitale Souveränität says it will bring a position paper on dependence in cloud, software, AI, and infrastructure into political and societal dialogue. It is an industry-led coalition, not a civil-society movement; its value will depend on whether the conversation produces concrete procurement choices, open interfaces, and public scrutiny rather than another label.

🏛️ Public AI reaches both desks and citizens

The federal government has launched GovGPT for civil servants, with prompts and uploaded documents processed on Bundesrechenzentrum infrastructure; `ida`, the separate assistant in the ID Austria app, answers citizen questions from verified government content. ☁️ A European production option arrives from A1 Digital

Exoscale, A1 Digital’s cloud subsidiary, launched Dedicated Inference: dedicated GPUs in European or Swiss data centres, model choice, and an OpenAI-compatible interface. This is a product launch, not proof of adoption. But it gives regulated teams a concrete route out of the pilot phase without committing every workload to a hyperscaler stack. Read more
