Floating islands as a visual idea belong to album art before they belong to games. Roger Dean’s covers for Yes through the 1970s, Fragile and Close to the Edge especially, put rock masses in empty sky with no visible support and no explanation offered. He worked in watercolour and gouache with airbrush, which is why those paintings glow at the edges in a way that oil never quite does. The forms are organic and slightly wrong, arches and stems where geology would give you cliffs.
That lineage runs straight through to concept art and into games. Anyone who has seen the Halo box, or Avatar’s Hallelujah Mountains, or a hundred fantasy MMO loading screens is looking at Dean’s grandchildren. The idea got so common that it stopped reading as strange, which is the risk with this prompt. A floating island on its own is wallpaper now. The bonsai is what saves it.
