From Interfaces to Intelligence — The Future of Design

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had several conversations that ended up focusing on variations of the same theme–is UX dead? In each case, my answer has been pretty much the same. No. Not dead, just evolving. Upon reflection, my answer remains the same but I needed to put some more thought into how UX has evolved, where UX is heading, and where design is heading more broadly in the era of AI.

I think the answer lies in several phases of my career and experiences. Specifically, UX design, service design, conversation design, prompt engineering, and agentic AI. Each of these areas represents different stages in my efforts to create more intuitive, human-centered interactions with technology. Read on for my thoughts on how these fields interconnect and what their evolution tells us about the future of design.

The Foundation: User Experience Design

I was introduced to UX design in the late 1990s when the first dotcom boom caused us to acknowledge that successful digital products required more than just functional interfaces. UX design focuses on creating meaningful, intuitive interactions between humans and digital systems. It encompasses user research, information architecture, interaction design, and usability testing to ensure that digital products not only work but truly serve human needs and behaviors.

Expanding the Scope: Service Design

As organizations realized that digital touchpoints were just one part of the customer journey, service design emerged as a holistic approach to designing end-to-end experiences. As the lead innovation advisor for a smart city project in Australia, I was exposed to this at scale. Service design looks at the entire ecosystem of interactions — both digital and physical — that make up a service (or in my case, a city). It considers the data, processes, interfaces, infrastructure, and systems that enable a seamless experience.

The Rise of Voice and Chat: Conversation Design

With the rise of chatbots, voice assistants, and natural language interfaces, conversation design emerged as a specialized discipline. Here, again, I had an early front-row seat in the emergence and innovation of this discipline as the founder of a conversation design studio a decade ago. We were building on core UX principles but also required an understanding of the nuances of human conversation, including turn-taking, context maintenance, and natural language patterns. Conversation designers expertly craft natural language interactions while effectively guiding users toward their goals.

The AI Revolution: Prompt Engineering

As large language models and generative AI became more sophisticated, prompt engineering emerged as a bridge between human intent and AI capabilities. Prompt engineers are, in my view, analogous to the part of the conversation designer’s role that design inputs to help AI systems understand context, constraints, and desired outcomes. This role requires at least a high-level understanding of both human communication patterns and the technical capabilities and limitations of AI models. In my view, it’s not a distinct discipline but rather a subset of what’s come before and a part of the bigger picture.

The Next Frontier: Agentic AI

And now we have the latest hype of Agentic AI, representing the latest evolution in this journey. Unlike traditional AI systems that respond to specific prompts, agentic AI systems can maintain ongoing goals, learn from interactions, and take autonomous actions within defined boundaries. These systems blur the line between tool and collaborator, requiring new approaches to design that consider ethical implications, trust-building, and human-AI collaboration.

The Interconnected Ecosystem of Human-Centered Design

These fields don’t exist in isolation — they form an interconnected web of practices and principles:

  1. Shared Human-Centricity: All these components prioritize understanding and serving human needs, though at different levels of abstraction.

  2. Evolution of Control: We’ve moved from designing controlled, predictable interactions (UX) to designing frameworks for emergent behavior (agentic AI).

  3. Increasing Complexity: Each new field adds layers of complexity, from single touchpoints to entire service ecosystems to autonomous systems.

  4. Expanding Scope: The scope has expanded from designing interfaces to designing relationships between humans and intelligent systems.

Where Are We Heading?

As we continue to rapidly evolve and converge, we’re seeing several emerging trends:

Hybrid Design Practices

The boundaries between these disciplines are increasingly blurred. Modern designers need to understand principles from multiple domains to create effective solutions. I have thoughts about this inspired by the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s, which I’ll write about next.

Ethics-First Design

As AI systems become more autonomous, ethical considerations must move from an afterthought to a fundamental design principle.

Adaptive Systems

We’re moving toward designing systems that can learn and adapt rather than fixed experiences that need to be manually updated.

Collaborative Intelligence

The future lies in designing systems that augment human capabilities rather than replace them, leading to new models of human-AI collaboration.

Implications for Designers

This evolution has significant implications for design practitioners:

  1. Expanded Skill Sets: Designers need to develop new skills across multiple disciplines to remain effective.

  2. Systems Thinking: Understanding complex systems and their interactions becomes crucial.

  3. Ethical Awareness: Designers must consider the broader implications of their work, particularly with autonomous systems.

  4. Collaborative Approaches: Design becomes more collaborative, involving multiple stakeholders and disciplines.

Conclusion

The evolution from UX design to agentic AI reflects our growing ability to create more sophisticated, natural, and autonomous technological systems. As these fields continue to converge and evolve, they’re reshaping not just how we design technology, but how we think about the relationship between humans and machines.

The future of design lies in creating systems that are not just user-friendly but truly intelligent collaborators in human activities. This requires us to draw on principles from all these fields while remaining focused on the fundamental goal: enhancing human capabilities and experiences through thoughtful, ethical, human-centric design.
