The Fourth Web Is Here. The People Laughing at It Today Are the Same Ones Who Passed on Bitcoin in 2010.

Something has shifted. Not coming. Not almost here. Shifted.

I did what any curious person does when they stumble onto something that feels important but slightly insane. I forwarded it to every smart person I knew.

They could not have cared less.

Not skeptical. Not even dismissive. Just nonplussed. The collective shrug of intelligent people who have seen too many things promise to change everything and deliver nothing. They had bills to pay and real work to do and no patience for internet money dreamed up by an anonymous stranger with a Japanese pseudonym.

So I went ahead without them.

I mined 50 Bitcoin. Found a faucet where you could click once every 24 hours and receive 5 more. I clicked it once. Got my 5. Felt clever about it.

Then I never clicked it again.

Then my computer crashed. I had not backed up my keys.

55 BTC. Lost. Not backed up. Gone forever. At today’s prices, somewhere north of three million dollars. Sitting in a digital grave I dug myself by being almost right and not quite disciplined enough.

The trailblazing pioneers often get the arrows.

Every single time, the people who move first pay a price the followers never have to pay. They look foolish before they look right. They lose things the skeptics never risked. They carry the weight of being early in a world that only rewards being on time.

I have been carrying that weight for 25 years. And I would not trade it for anything. Because here is what being early actually gives you: the ability to recognize the next one while it is still invisible to everyone else.

Here we are again.

Each era did not replace what came before. It added a capability layer on top of everything that existed.

The internet was a library. Enormous, searchable, entirely one-directional. I stayed up 36 hours straight the first time I got online, learning HTML so I could build my comedy website on Angelfire. I was doing SEO on AltaVista, Dogpile, and Excite before Google existed. Paid search on Overture before anyone called it PPC. Most people thought it was a fad. Most people were wrong.

The library became a stadium and handed everyone a microphone. My first social media campaign ran on Friendster. I watched MySpace eat it. Facebook eat MySpace. I was global digital strategist at Symantec. Ran marketing for three Silicon Valley martech startups simultaneously. The attention economy was born here. Google. Facebook. Amazon. All of it built on one insight: give people a place to talk and they will never stop.

Web3 arrived with the most ambitious promise of the three. Ownership. Real, verifiable, programmable ownership of digital things. The timing was wrong. The execution was often worse. But the architecture was right. I co-host the second longest-running cryptocurrency podcast in the industry. The obituaries for Web3 are premature. The ownership layer is still being built, and it will matter more in The Fourth Web than it ever did alone.

The Fourth Web is the first era in which the participants on the internet are not all human. An agent does not read. It perceives. It does not write. It creates, publishes, transacts, and builds. It does not wait for you to start it.

It runs while you sleep.

Every previous automation waited for a human to begin. That era is over.

That is The Fourth Web.

The Wire is a live intelligence feed run by a swarm of agents scouring the web around the clock. Three categories that define this era:
