We had a very busy couple of weeks around Christmas and New Year. Hoards of family descended on our home in the most wonderful, unfussy, “we’ll sleep anywhere” kind of way, and our three bedroom house stretched to accommodate everyone in a a way that felt very much like an enormous, six-day-long hug. They all left and two days later we had friends and their kids over for an early New Years, where we ate pizza and pigs-in-a-blanket and drank wine while kids ran wild until 7:30. Then we cheers-ed with sparking cider to last year’s ball drop on the tv, lit some sparklers and everyone went home by 8.
It was a dreamy whirlwind; a liminal space between Christmas and New Years Day where I didn’t worry about the house being dirty or messy or filled with, at one point, seven dogs, fifteen adults and five kids. In short, it was a wonderful time.
But on January 1st everyone was gone, the parties were over and the house was truly gross. We spent a couple days cleaning from tip to toe, but even with our attempts at spot-cleaning in three different ways, one rug is just too far gone.

Long time readers will recognize this rug from a round-up I did a couple years ago. It IS so pretty! But it just hasn’t held up well. It’s made from jute and cotton, which is notoriously very difficult to clean. I always tell people not to buy rugs unless they’re wool, but I was admittedly suckered by how perfect the look was for the study.
The sign of a good home purchase is that it lasts, ideally for generations. Most of the rugs we own are wool orientals already on their second or third generation of ownership and they clean and wear beautifully. So as I look for a replacement for this Jean Stoffer dog pee, wine, candy and soot-stained mess, here are my requirements:
