The very first one!

Hello there!

And welcome to the very first Something Cute and Scary -newsletter!

Thank you for subscribing and don’t worry, I’m not going to spam your inbox full of emails. My goal is to send one email per month, where you can hear about my latest works and hopefully give you some inspiration for something cute and/or scary.

I might post some comics to the website during the month, but those won’t be sent to your email. You can go and check them out directly from the website (ahokoivu.substack.com) or read all of them in one go from these monthly emails.

I’m very new to Substack so I’m still learning how to use it. Feedback is always welcome! Now let’s get on with it!

New comics in Substack

A new Webcomic

I have started a webcomic about libraries. It’s called Find me at the Library and I’ve posted two comics so far. You can find it at atthelibrary.substack.com

Kuš! anthology Mythbústers

I did a little comic to Kuš! anthology Mythbústers. I’ve been fan of Kuš! for ages and have made couple of comics to them before. I’m so happy to be included in this one, it was such a fun story to do. The theme was myths in nordic countries. My story is about Deaths last day of work. They, naturally, go by skies.

The book is in English and you can order your copy from their website www.komikss.lv

A new comic book

In September Asema (who turned 25 this year, yay!) published a new comic from me! Avaruudessa kuolemisen haasteita, or Challenges of dying in space in English, is a little book (56 pages) about death, astronauts and bears. So far it’s only in Finnish, but if that doesn’t scare you, you can order your copy from Asema’s website.

Over at Instagram

Recently I’ve been trying out some gouache painting. It’s difficult but also kind of fun. I’ve been posting some of the paintings to my Instagram:

Something scary

Every October me and my partner try to watch one horror movie per day. Some years we have themes, but usually we just take turns on picking a movie. Here’s this years list, if you’re craving for some horror inspiration. It’s missing the 31st movie, because I’m writing this on the day, but if for some reason you’re curious, you can find the complete list from my Letterboxd.

This years winners were definitely Weapons and When evil lurks. We also watched some solid classics like An American Werewolf in London and The Craft, but I hadn’t seen Weapons or When evil lurks before, and they both blew me away. Overall this year was pretty good, there weren’t so many disappointments (except for Climax which wasn’t really for me). I also maybe should start every October with Muppet’s Haunted house. It’s not nearly as good as the Muppet’s Christmas carol (duh!), but I find it sweet and funny and every time I see it, I like it more.

Alright, I guess that’s it for now! Thank you for reading and see you next month!
