The Fire in Her Eyes

There was a time when the fire in her eyes was still there.

Before the tragedy.

Before the hospital rooms.

Before the phone calls that made her stomach drop.

Before she had to watch someone she loved slowly lose their battle with cancer right in front of her.

There is a kind of pain that changes you.

Not the kind people talk about lightly. Not the kind that goes away after a few good cries or a few months of “staying strong.” I mean the kind of pain that sits in your chest and makes it hard to breathe. The kind that makes you cry so much your eyes swell, and one day you look in the mirror and realize you do not even recognize yourself anymore.

The light is gone.

The life in your eyes has been drained out of you.

And the worst part is, you remember who you were before.

You remember the version of yourself who laughed without guilt. Who woke up without that heavy ache sitting on her heart. Who did not know what it felt like to watch suffering up close. Who had not yet been forced to understand how cruel life can be.

Then one day, something happens that flips your entire world upside down.

A tragic event. A loss. A goodbye you were not ready for. A moment that punches you in the gut so hard you never fully stand the same way again.

And after that, nothing feels normal.

You try to go through the days, but the memory follows you. You try to laugh, but something inside you still hurts. You try to be present, but your mind keeps going back to that person, that room, that sickness, that final moment, that version of life before everything changed.

And then, slowly, day by day, month by month, year by year… you keep moving.

Not because it stops hurting.

Not because you are suddenly okay.

Not because the sadness disappears.

You move because life keeps pulling you forward, even when your heart is still somewhere behind you.

The sorrow fades in some moments, but it never fully leaves. It becomes that lump in your throat. That quiet ache in your soul. That shattered place you learn how to carry.

You still laugh sometimes, but it does not feel the same.

You still smile, but you know what it took to get there.

You still live, but a part of you is always aware of what is missing.

And maybe that is the part nobody tells you about grief.

You do move on.

But you do not move on as the same person.

You learn how to live without the fire in your eyes.

And honestly, it sucks.

Because why do we have to suffer like this? Why does life have to take people we love and leave us here trying to figure out how to breathe around the empty space they left behind?

It is not fair.

The world feels colder without her.

Life feels heavier without her.

Some days, it feels like this whole place is nothing but a broken, unfair, painful mess.

But somehow… life still goes on.

Even when we do not want it to.

Even when we are tired.

Even when we are changed forever.

So we keep going.

With the ache.

With the memories.

With the love.

With the grief.

And maybe one day, the fire will not come back the way it was before.

Maybe it comes back softer.

Not as wild. Not as innocent. Not untouched by pain.

But as something deeper.

A small flame that says:

I survived something that broke me.

I loved someone so deeply that losing her changed me.

And even without the fire I used to have in my eyes… I am still here.
