Cloudy Summer Day

Cloudy summer days

are the kindest ones to me,

when the sky pulls down its curtains

and lets the tired earth breathe.

A soft little reset

before the heat comes back to stay,

before the sun gets arrogant

and burns the peace away.

Summer felt like magic

when I was young and wild,

bare feet on the pavement,

freedom as a child.

But now it feels like sweat

and bills beneath the fan,

a season far too dramatic

for one grown woman’s plans.

So give me gray skies,

give me rain that softly plays,

give me clouds that hush the world

on heavy summer days.

I’ll sit here with my coffee,

let the cool air be my friend,

humming under my breath

wake me up when September ends.
