Ukraine’s Silent Epidemic: The Rising AMR Crisis No One’s Talking About

While the world watches missiles fly across Eastern Europe, a slower, more insidious threat is spreading through Ukraine’s hospitals, refugee centers, and food systems — a threat that could cross borders and overwhelm even the best-resourced healthcare systems: antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

In January 2025, I authored a confidential national security briefing to the White House and senior officials outlining the worsening AMR crisis in Ukraine. This article presents a public summary of that warning. The key message is simple:

If we ignore the Ukrainian AMR crisis, we are sleepwalking into the post-antibiotic era.
