I used to have a friend who always told me: ‘You know how I constantly feel? Every time I look in the mirror, every time I talk to a woman, every time I open my wallet, there is just one word that comes to mind: inadequate.’
And yet… he was good-looking. He was going to the gym daily and had been doing it for the past twenty years. He had long-term relationships with beautiful women who loved him, and he loved them. He wasn’t struggling financially. And still… not enough.
When he got like that, I’d always ask him what would make him feel better. And his answer was always: let’s go buy something.
No matter how much you buy, it’s never enough to make you feel better, because that was never what it was designed to do.
In 1932, a senior executive at General Motors said something that most companies keep to themselves, because it’s horrible. Charles Kettering, the company’s head of research, declared that “one of the fundamental purposes of research is to foster a healthy dissatisfaction.”
