The Transaction

If a man knows something is harming him and continues to do it, he should at least be honest with himself about why.

What is he hiding from? What is he refusing to reflect upon? What is the root cause? Most people spend their lives justifying their habits while knowing, deep within their own internal dialogue, that they are lying. It’s a vicious cycle, one that plagues society and holds back countless Christians.

It can be drinking. It can be smoking. It can be drugs. It can be gambling. It can be scrolling endlessly on social media. It can be anger, lust, resentment, revenge, or any number of passions that slowly take hold of a man. We know these things are harming us. We know they are pulling us away from who we are meant to be. Yet we continue.

Why?

Because this is more than a battle of willpower. It is an unseen battle between darkness and light. As Christians, we understand that evil is real. Satan is real. The demonic is real. The goal is not always to destroy a man overnight. More often, it is to slowly separate him from God. To keep him distracted. To keep him comfortable. To keep him chasing temporary pleasures while neglecting his soul.

The habit is the transaction.

But before a transaction can occur, there must be participation.

The uncomfortable truth is that eventually we cannot keep blaming the habit. We cannot keep blaming our childhood. We cannot keep blaming society, culture, politicians, social media, or anyone else. At some point, we have to acknowledge that our participation is the transaction.

The voices in our heads are lying.

The promises are false.

We know the comfort is temporary. We know the relief will fade. We know the pleasure never lasts. And yet, time and time again, we willingly sign our name at the bottom of the contract.

But you are not paying God. You are paying the devil.

Countless times we read stories or hear people talking about how they “sold their soul to the devil” and think of it as fantasy. It is not.

The devil offers fake comfort, false escape, temporary excitement, short-term relief, counterfeit validation, and endless distraction. He convinces a man that what he is seeking can be found in the next drink, the next cigarette, the next wager, the next scroll, the next indulgence.

It never can.

Because what a man is truly seeking is peace. Serenity. Harmony. Understanding. Purpose. The love of God. The glory of God. Communion with God.

The tragedy is that many people know this. They feel it. They hear it in that quiet internal dialogue that never fully goes away. Yet they continue making the transaction because the darkness has convinced them that fulfillment lies just one more indulgence away.

What amazes me is that most of us know God exists.

We wear the cross.

We go to church.

We call ourselves Christians.

If someone asks us whether we believe in God, we answer yes without hesitation.

Yet so many of us refuse to walk the path that brings us closer to Him.

Why?

Because we are losing the internal battle.

We keep signing the contract.

We keep accepting the transaction.

We keep choosing temporary comfort over eternal truth.

Repentance is so powerful because it is not simply feeling bad about our sins. It is the moment a man stops agreeing with the lie. The moment he stops defending the thing that is destroying him. The moment he stops calling darkness light.

It is the moment he says, “No more.”

Not because he suddenly became stronger than everyone else.

Not because he suddenly became more disciplined.

But because he finally became honest.

Because he finally started seeing the unseen.

That is when the battle begins to turn.

That is when the chains begin to loosen.

That is when the devil starts losing.

The day a man becomes completely honest with himself is the day he begins to break free. The day he stops justifying his chains, recognizes the battle for what it is, and turns toward God is the day he begins walking toward the light.

Because the battle was never really about the habit.

The war is being fought daily, and you are allowing yourself to lose.

God is waiting for your return.
