It’s Wednesday June 17th and, if you are a sports fan, you may be anticipating the big sporting clash coming up later today. According to whether you follow football, cricket or racing you may interpret this as a reference to England’s match with Croatia in the FIFA World Cup in Dallas, England’s Test fixture against New Zealand at the Kia Oval, or Daryz v Ombudsman in the 4.20 at Royal Ascot. But the clash I’m actually referring to is the diary clash between these major sporting fixtures taking place on the same day, which has led today being branded Super Wednesday in the corporate world.
Back in the days before compliance killjoys banned many forms of client entertainment, the Social Season was the most important three months in the corporate hospitality calendar. It starts with the Chelsea Flower Show in May and goes on till Glorious Goodwood at the end of July, after which everyone decamps to their holiday homes in France. Every couple of years the Season is complicated by the intrusion of a one-off, interpolated event, such as the Olympics or, as in this year, the World Cup.
