There are moments you don’t narrate while they’re happening.

There’s a version of “I Went to Buy a Dress in Bordeaux” that works well on paper.

It’s visual, structured, slightly chaotic in a controlled way like everything unfolded exactly as it should and I was simply there to observe it and translate it into something coherent afterward.

That’s not the version I experienced.

The version I experienced had layers. I was there to find a dress for my daugher’s engagement party in NYC next month.

There was the movement, the noise, the constant shifting of direction, the kind of energy that makes you feel like if you stop for even a second you’ll lose your place in it entirely.

And underneath all of that, there was something else running quietly alongside it, not attached to anything in particular, but present in a way that was difficult to ignore.
