Welcome to the inaugural edition of my series: "C’est quoi, ça?” (what is that?) where I succinctly share neat tidbits of information regarding history, location, and things in the Loire Valley and beyond. I am inquisitive by nature, frequently asking, “but why?” and this series will feed the part of us that loves to learn and discover.
No visit to Blois, France is complete without seeing the Denis Papin staircase (l’escalier Denis Papin). Around a 10 minute walk from the train station and a five minute walk from the Château Royal de Blois, 120 steps link the lower part of Blois with the upper. Named after a 17th century French physicist and inventor, Denis Papin is known for both his invention of a type of pressure cooker as well as his work on advancing technology of the steam engine. Born near Blois in the mid 1600s, his statue looks out over the city from atop the staircase.
Starting around 2013, artwork was displayed on the stair’s risers and now, new art rotates throughout the year, creating an outdoor space full of color, history, and immersion. Past years have seen stair riser art celebrating, amongst others:

Currently, the staircase displays the hippopotamus mascot of the Natural History Museum of Blois, Georges and is entitled, “Georges, plus grand que nature/Georges, larger than life”.

If you are planning to visit the Loire Valley, Blois is a must visit. Yes, the staircase is a beautiful work of art. In addition, the old part of the city has quiet, winding, narrow roads. A château constructed during four distinct architectural periods sits atop a hill, overlooking the valley. And you will find numerous intimate restaurants creating delicious three and five course meals. Blois is truly a hidden gem. I hope you can come discover its beauty and history.
