Several building types rely upon high-temperature (180F+) water for processes like hydronic space heating, final-cycle dishwashing, and sanitization. Until recently, heat pump technology was limited to lower temperature applications. But the heat pump market is evolving rapidly, and several products capable of producing 180F to 194F are now available for multifamily and commercial buildings like hospitals, gyms, and breweries.

NEEA Hot Water Innovation Prize - AWHI is a proud co-sponsor of NEEA’s Hot Water Innovation Prize, a national effort led by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) to accelerate the development of a new type of affordable and efficient water heater. The Hot Water Innovation Prize is working to bring small split-system heat pump water heaters to the market, which will reduce energy use, lower emissions, and help people save hundreds of dollars each year. According to NEEA estimates, these systems could represent up to 2.4 million units in annual sales.
The contest includes three phases: qualification, project plan development, and prototype submissions. Later this year, we’ll be announcing up to two prize winners, who will receive $175,000 in co-funding and inclusion in utility demonstration projects across the country. These winners’ efforts will provide valuable data on performance, installation, and customer satisfaction, laying the groundwork for broader adoption. By supporting initiatives like this, we are helping to ensure that next-generation technologies are efficient and accessible.
