Hi ADHDers!
Happy Hump Day!
Well it’s not hump day anymore, but since I was meant to send this newsletter on Wednesday, I have taken an executive decision to keep it in lol.
Ok now back to the topic.
So oversimplified that ADHD has been reduced to a case of people having short attention spans. Completely erasing the other 15 or so ADHD symptoms and our real life experiences of adulting with ADHD.
In my previous newsletter titled ‘Is it ADHD or Brain Rot’, I tried to explain that a short attention span is not the sole indicator of ADHD.
Especially because we’re in the era of doomscrolling, short-form content, and different things competing for our attention.
Sorry, I needed to have a bit of a moan about this.
This newsletter was sparked by the upcoming Channel 4 documentary ‘The Great ADHD Myth’.
People are being obtuse to the fact that:
➡️ An increase in ADHD awareness and visibility has enabled people to identify signs of ADHD in their lives, and they go on to get assessed and many diagnosed
➡️ Studies point to the fact that ADHD has been missed in girls, and many women of colour are underdiagnosed
➡️ You can thrive in some areas of life, have a stable job, but still struggle here and there to manage ADHD
📕 When I wrote my ebook, I made sure to cover all aspects of what it’s like living with ADHD so people can grasp the personal impact and knock-on effects on friendships, finances, hormones, parenting, etc.
I’m worried that this discourse and messaging will negatively affect ADHDers who might need accommodations at school or in the workplace.
Especially if the doctors in that documentary are backing the sentiment that ‘ADHD is a myth’.
ADHD is not an ‘excuse’, a fad, or a myth. ADHD is indeed a Neurodevelopmental condition, as written in the DSM.
