Today’s utopianote: Recently I’ve been thinking about the Bronx rebuilding movement, a visionary cooperative effort originating in the 1970s where the people of the Boogie Down reconstructed, by hand, their own neighborhoods which had suffered from civic neglect, redlining, and other kinds of racist policies: grassroots tenant associations grew into block associations grew into mutual aid networks, even with all forms of state power stacked against it. But the movement was so successful, at such a massive scale, over so many decades, it became, for me, the most important lens to re-orient what we’re talking about when we talk about “American utopian history” in Heaven is a Place on Earth. It wasn’t called utopianism, but it produced some of the most hard-won cooperative infrastructure in the country, and it did so in spite of the fact that, according to the laws of capital and conquest, it wasn’t supposed to be able to happen, but did.
