5 Residencies You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

There is a version of the artist residency that exists mostly in the American imagination, i.e. white clapboard farmhouse, a month of walks in the woods, a bell that rings for dinner, something like that. It is a real thing, and a good thing, but it is not the only shape this can take. There’s live/work farms taking international applications on a rolling basis, urban makers’ spaces with equipment to share, couples who’ve dedicated part of their home to visiting filmmakers, flexible fellowships at steel yards, participating public libraries, and so many others. The utopianote, as ever, is not one thing. It multiplies.

Here are five you have probably never heard of.

Arts&Rec Adrianna Newell Fellowship
A live/work studio residency in Stamford, NY (Western Catskills) for October 2026 with possible extension into November for a queer lens-based artist working in media forms of photography and moving images on projects that engage queer POVs and relationships to land, rurality, and regional spaces. Fellows have use of a 1000sf studio and attached apartment, stipend for materials and a per diem (totaling $1500) and are introduced to the local artists and creative community.

The Residency at Casa Gracia
Three visual artists are invited for stays of up to three months, and two writers for stays of up to six months, with access to a beautiful, newly-renovated studio with soaring ceilings and tons of natural light. Writers enjoy a private floor of the residence that includes their bedroom and study.

CASA PIP Residency for Filmmakers
A residency in Portugal, founded and run by filmmakers. Filmmakers, screenwriters, or authors interested in adapting literature into film, emerging or established, please apply. No professional film experience necessary.

Lisa Brown & Daniel Handler Writer Residency 2026-27
A writer residency brought to you by McSweeney’s and the San Francisco Public Library, named for Lisa Brown and Daniel Handler.

Steel Yard Micro-Residencies
The Providence, RI-based program can assist you in growing and strengthening your creative industrial art practice with flexible time commitments of one to three months. One ceramics and one metals micro-resident are hosted at a time.
