It’s just before sunrise here in Dallas, Texas.
I’ve got a 70-pound hound snoring beside me, and the remnants of a few salty tears drying into my whiskers.
As I sit watching the glow of my salt lamp illuminate the spiraling incense in the corner, I feel sad.
But also — grateful.
While these past five days have been hard for everyone in my family, they’ve also highlighted two things: how much joy Ozzie Wozzie brought into our lives… and just how lucky we are to have each other to lean on.
My family is small, but tight.
And with all that’s going on in the world, these last few days have been such a beautiful reminder of what matters most — each other.
Friends and family.
At the end of the day, it’s our connections with people (and pets) that make life rich and valuable.
Material items don’t mean shit — and sadly, sometimes it takes the loss of a loved one to remind us that it’s relationships that are life’s most important currency.
And sometimes, it’s our responsibility to maintain and nurture them.
Having to say goodbye to Ozzie reminded me of just that.
The pain drummed up by her passing allowed me to realize there were other emotions I’d been both holding onto… and hiding from.
Consequently, yesterday I reached out to one of my best friends — someone who, due to a rather unfortunate disagreement back in Thailand, I hadn’t spoken to in three very long years.
Thanks to the love Ozzie’s passing broke open, I knew it was time to override my deep-seated pride and extend an olive branch to one of the most important relationships of my life.
We shall see what comes of my effort, but I have to say — I do feel proud of myself for being willing to swallow my pride… and honor my heart.
I guess that’s the power of love Ozzie leaves behind.
Rest In Paradise, Ozzie Wozzie
Reunited… And It Smells So Good
Never Again, My Arse
Fruit For Thought, In Baghdad
That’s gonna do it for this humpday’s Notes & A Nugget.
I do want to give yet another shoutout to everyone who’s reached out and shared their own personal experience with losing a pet.
Being able to relate and resonate with others in such a way always provides something special.
With Gratitude & Gusto,
