A heartfelt thank you for being here, and for being interested in these compassion-driven stories from around the world.
I also want to acknowledge that I missed this past Wednesday’s edition of Notes and a Nugget.
But believe me, it wasn’t because I’ve been sitting around twiddling my thumbs.
Sadly, an unexpected flood in a small family office has had me swimming in damage control.
Since last Saturday, I’ve been dealing with buckling hardwood floors, contractors, and a full plate of big decisions I didn’t exactly have penciled in on my summer calendar.
But as we all know, water is not to be trifled with.
Because this building sits on a slope, one small leak led to the saturation of this particular office’s floors, baseboards, and insulation — which can be a dangerous combination in this Texas heat and humidity.
Consequently, everything below the flood line has to be yanked and replaced.
As some of you know, I’m back in Dallas for a season.
But what you don’t know is that managing this building is one of the ways I’m able to keep myself afloat.
Every unconventional life requires a few strategic moves to make things work… and keeping up with this place is a piece of that puzzle for me.
It’s not glamorous, and it can, at times, require a decent amount of maintenance.
But this week?
This week has been the ultimate not-so-subtle reminder of just how all-consuming that maintenance can be.
From dawn ’til dusk, every day, I’ve been bouncing between ripped-up floors and crumbling sheetrock — trying to sort out what needs to be done now, and what can wait ’til later.
It’s been a challenge watching so much of this place be shredded in the blink of an eye.
And while all the damage has certainly created an enormous amount of stress and anxiety, I’d be lying if I said there hasn’t also been something deeply satisfying in getting to learn so much on the fly.
It’s also given me a whole new level of respect for the guys who do this kind of backbreaking work every single day.
All that to say, this is the reason why this week’s Nugget comes at you waterlogged — and a few days behind schedule.
