Inspired by last week’s post, I’m creating *visual maps* of what I learn. Every week, I’ll be sharing what I learned, how I learned it, and my learning doodle.

Ever tried learning how to code?

After a year of on-again, off-again attempts of learning how to code, I kept hitting the same wall — analysis paralysis 😵‍💫 My mind was filled with questions like:

  • Which coding language should I learn first?

  • Should I learn how to code for work or just for fun?

  • There’s so many courses out there! Which one should I take?

After months of mulling over these questions, I still hadn’t learned a single thing. So I finally committed.

  • Language to learn? I’ll start out learning Python (a pretty versatile programming language)

  • For work or for fun? At least to start, I’ll focus on having fun and choose projects that I find cool to stay motivated. And eventually, I’ll be able to use it at work!

  • Which course? Instead of only using one class, I’ll be hand-stitching multiple video courses to swap around teaching styles and projects

This week, I learned how to build an Emoji Land — literally.

I originally thought this would be a cutesy starter project, but there was a lot packed underneath — like learning how to randomly loop over emojis to systematically create lakes with beaches, mountains with pine trees, and suburb communities.

The coolest part about this tutorial is that the technique of “procedurally generating terrain” is used to create the world of Minecraft and even some Disney movies back in the day.

I used the SuperHi course Intro to Python. While the project output was really cool, I didn’t think this was the best intro to Python. The class glossed over a lot of Python essentials very quickly (like loops, libraries, and functions). But the biggest win from this class was that it got me excited to hammer down on the basics to build other cool projects.

Me: (dives into a cute emoji land project thinking that it would be easy)

Github code & output here!

P.S. GitHub was always a black box to me, especially as a non-technical person. So one of my journal entries will cover how I learned to use GitHub.
