⚠️ A wave of attacks exploiting vulnerabilities discovered with artificial intelligence is intensifying. This time, BTCPay Server has been targeted: attackers are exploiting a vulnerability to steal funds from Lightning nodes. BTCPay has confirmed the attacks and released emergency update 2.4.2, urging LND users to update immediately or shut down their servers.
The vulnerability allows remote access to .macaroon files, which provide control over an LND node. An attacker can use them to close Lightning channels and withdraw funds. Standard BTCPay on-chain wallets are not affected.
Confirmed victims include hardware wallet manufacturer Foundation and Bitcoin publication Citadel21. Foundation reported that its Lightning node had been completely drained, while its on-chain hot wallet remained untouched. The total amount lost has not yet been disclosed.
BTCPay Server is open-source infrastructure for accepting Bitcoin and Lightning payments without intermediaries, essentially a Bitcoin equivalent of Stripe. With each new generation of LLMs, the wave of attacks will only intensify. Security will have to be reassessed constantly, while keeping applications updated, isolating keys, and minimizing access permissions must become core practices.
ETF flows improved significantly this week. Weekly net inflows reached 13.46K BTC, the strongest weekly result in the past month. Meanwhile, medium-term momentum rose from a low of -107.22K BTC on June 30 to +397 BTC. This means ETF pressure has disappeared for now, but sustained positive ETF demand has not yet formed.
Let’s also look at overall sentiment among crypto market participants. The monthly Fear & Greed reading stands at 27.1. This is above its 90-day average of 23.7. Put simply, sentiment over the past month has been slightly better than the average for the past three months.
However, the monthly reading remains below its annual average of 28.3. In other words, sentiment has improved, but only slightly. The market is recovering from a period of intense fear, but it is still too early to call this a full shift toward a more positive state.
