HIT PLAY right now. Turn the volume up. Sit down or lace up, because this one runs long and it earns every minute. Have tea, coffee or whatever you need to stay grounded brother!!!
Zeno of Citium said well-being is realized by small steps, but is truly no small thing. That’s this episode. Two men. One garage-forged legend, one Midwest scholar-fighter. A conversation that started small and turned into something none of us saw coming.
I sat with Chris Haueter and Scott Burr and I felt time disappear. Their NEW book The Chris Haueter Book: A Memoir is being downloaded and read directly by almost everybody in BJJ and MMA. Chris is one of the first American BJJ black belts and his life is truly the stuff of legend. Beyond that he is an artist and learning how BJJ changed his perspectives on art and vice versa were fascinating. Scott Burr is a black belt under Rickson Gracie & Steve Maxwell and his knowledge of BJJ and method of conveying big ideas with ease makes them a great pair.
Not metaphor. Not hype. Time actually disappeared for me. We talked technique. We talked ethics. We talked Stoicism and Taoism in the same breath, art and business in the same sentence, the old ways of the mat colliding with the new machinery of technology creeping into the sport. Chris built Combat Base with his bare hands and his own philosophy: Think Street. Train Sport. Practice Art. Scott writes it, edits it, lives it, and now the two of them have a book that carries that same DNA. We got into all of it.
Not a single boring second. Not one. These two hit three-point shots of wisdom the way Curry and Klay hit them in their prime. Rhythm. Range. No hesitation. You will laugh, you will pause the episode to think, and you might rewind a section just to catch what you missed the first time.
This might be the longest episode I’ve ever put out. Wasn’t the plan. Wasn’t the intention. But some conversations refuse to be short, and this was one of them. It felt like a light trip through everything BJJ touches when you let it breathe. To be clear: I do not suggest or condone psychedelics. I’m talking about ideas moving fast and free, nothing more.
Embrace the mayhem. Share this with five people you know who love this art the way we do. And go get the book. If you don’t, I’m not gonna slap you. I’m just gonna want to. Bad. Real bad.
HIT PLAY and stay to the end. You’ll walk away different than you walked in.
Musonius Rufus wrote it plain: if you accomplish something good with hard work, the labor passes quickly, but the good does not. This episode was work to make. It will be work to sit through in one sitting. But the good stays. Long after the runtime fades, this one stays with you.
