Interlude: A Scanner Constantly

Before the by-gone era of the pandemic, Tik Tok, and Trump Terror Train, I wrote this story to cope with the never-ending brain scans required to keep alive. In the decade since we created this with Josh Neufeld, “A Scanner Constantly” has become more relevant: we are all constantly scanned now, much as the prophetic novel Philip K Dick well before his epigram below.

It scans us all now. There is no escape. And it has continued to scan me during all those years, as I too have had no escape.

More chemo, more radiation, but also, now infusions, a port, and another brain surgery, including an “awake surgery” (which I will write about more later. – it’s a trip).

I’m still kicking, even as I’m a few hours since my infusion at Richmond Kaiser.

I’m still here and living.

And it’s not about chemo, surgery, or scans – though they kept me alive all these years.

It’s about remaining human.

Despite all the forces fighting against our humanity, despite all the suffering and pain from our bodies and the world , we choose humanity.

I choose humanity.
