2026 was always going to be a pivotal year for Syracuse University. Back in August, Syracuse announced that Chancellor Kent Syverud would be stepping down at the end of the 2025-26 academic year, ending a 13 year tenure that oversaw tremendous changes across all aspects of the University.
What was unexpected was the news this weekend that Syverud is not retiring or stepping away from higher ed; To the contrary, Syverud is going to be President of the University of Michigan effective a vote on Monday. Calling the move “stunning” is dramatic, but this move does have fairly large ripples across Syracuse because of the obvious elephant in the room that is collegiate athletics.
