Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve gotten to this space, my new job has been far more demanding than I expected, and the honest truth is, there wasn’t much that got me very interested in writing about Syracuse. The football program’s transfer window activity was relatively predictable and covered on Disloyal Idiots, and a basketball team falling into the bottom tier of the ACC had little to no interest for anyone.
Then, back in January, I wrote about how there was more than likely going to be a seismic shift at Syracuse due to the transition of Chancellor Kent Syverud. As I predicted, Athletic Director John Wildhack’s retirement and men’s head basketball coach Adrian Autry firing over the next 45 days came to pass, and put Syracuse in an interesting position.
Now, an internal admin has been promoted to chancellor, an up and coming young, ambitious athletic director has been brought in from outside the organization, and as of Sunday afternoon, it appears as if a former point guard and assistant coach will be named head men’s basketball coach. All of that is worth writing about.
So for those who do not want to read the whole thing, here’s the lowdown:
Syracuse was always going to be in a difficult spot with this hire due to the timing and realities of transitioning all admin positions at the University in the same window.
Gerry McNamara was not the first choice coach, but was always considered.
The move, for better or worse, on paper, is probably the most economically responsible but has a higher probability of maintaining Syracuse’s current status quo than elevating or restoring.
