(Salvador Dai ‘The Temptation of Saint Anthony’ 1946)
There was once a beautiful Princess called Spirit. She was named Spirit because tragedy had struck at the time of her birth when her Mother had passed away due to complications in labour. Her Father, the King, had been devastated by the events as he had been deeply in love with the Queen and could only find peace by surrendering to the will of divine spirit.
As was her way, Spirit grew to be the spitting image of her Mother and at all times the King surrendered to her will and gave her the freedom to do what she wished. Spirit thrived and found joy in wandering the forests of the kingdom, spending time with the people and the animals. In turn the people watched over her and grew to love her free spirit and open heart.
But as Spirit came into adulthood tragedy struck once again when her Father became seriously ill. On his deathbed he stared into the eyes of his beautiful daughter and was struck by the shards of fear, “Who would look after Spirit when he was gone?”, he wondered. With little time left he sent out word to suitable suitors for his daughter who came to visit him and present their case for why they should be chosen to be her husband.
A man called Kael came to see the King. He was known by many to be the richest man in the lands who owned many businesses and employed many people, but he was also reclusive and had never been married.
“I have much money”, he said to the King, “I will give Spirit everything she wishes and make sure she is safe and cared for.”
The King thought about Kael’s proposal, and struck with the fear of what would happen to his only daughter when he was gone he accepted Kael’s offer and summoned Spirit to tell her of his decision.
He had always given Spirit her freedom but now that he was dying he asked her to agree to his wishes and marry Kael. Spirit loved her Father very much and because of this she trusted him and agreed.
Soon the King died and Kael and Spirit were married. Kael came to live at the castle and true to his word he did his best to give Spirit everything she wanted and to make sure she was safe. He saw that she loved to roam the forests but he was worried for her safety so instead he had a huge walled garden built that was attached to the Castle grounds. The best and most skilled gardeners and artists came to build it and it was breathtakingly beautiful with many different coloured flowers, ponds, waterfalls and places to sit in the sun.
Kael watched Spirit from his chambers high up in the Castle tower and even from that distance he could see that her spark of life was dimming. He was afraid that he would lose her so he thought long and hard about how to make her happy. He realised that she loved animals but was afraid for her to go out into the wild, how could he keep her safe if she was alone in the wild? He decided that the answer was to build an even bigger enclosed area and to bring in a range of animals for her to be with.
Once again the best and most skilled people in the land came to build the enclosure. A range of the most amazing animal creatures were brought in and soon Spirit was able to wander through the enclosure and sit with the animals. But even so, Kael could see from his chambers that she was not happy.
As time passed Spirit became more and more withdrawn and Kael became more and more fearful that he was failing in looking after her and that he would lose her. Kael’s fear gnawed at him and made him spend more and more time watching Spirit trying to control the circumstances of her life. Finally in desperation he called her too him.
“I have given you everything you wish for. The most beautiful garden in all the lands. The most amazing animals for you to sit with. Why are you not happy? What is it that you wish for?”
Spirit stared back at Kael and breathed deeply.
“I wish for my freedom”, she said
Can you relate to this story?
If we are to walk a sacred path and participate in the evolution of love based consciousness we need to understand how to do it. The old way is fear based and it rests on the belief in separation. There is me and you, us and them, subject and object – if you win, I lose, if you are right I must be wrong. It is simplistic and binary. Separation and fear leads us down the path of control. You’re either on the inside or the outside, you’re one of us or you’re one of them. We must be afraid of each other and hence we must rely on control and surveillance in case ‘they’ do something bad. And you better be good otherwise you will be in trouble, we are watching…
This is a power over paradigm, it rests on threats and coercion, do this or else…
But the other way is love based consciousness. If human consciousness is evolving, which I would suggest to you that it is – which one would you like to choose? One is easy but limiting and restrictive, the other is scary but enables freedom.
There is no love without freedom.
Fear leads to control and control shuts down freedom. The ability to step into the unknown with an open heart, willing to embrace what comes to you. In the World now there are many that peddle fear, tell us why we must be afraid and why we need them to protect us. But living in a walled garden being watched over all of the time is soul destroying. It is a lie that must be faced.
To grow in love based consciousness requires freedom. Freedom starts with the self and the willingness to grant the self the freedom to pursue what the heart desires. Freedom means being free of ‘them’ what ‘they’ say you must do and how you must be. Your heart knows what is right, it does not need to be told. When you experience what is good you feel it, you know it.
Release your fear and grant others their freedom.
Why are you afraid of what they might do? Are you afraid because then you might be alone? Can you see that if you embrace interconnectedness then you are never alone?
To be free though you need to trust.
To be able to trust you need truth.
In the world now the biggest question is what is real and what is not real. When you walk a sacred path, truth is protection. But to speak truth you must be free of fear.
Can you take the first step on the path of love by speaking truth?
In peace and love always.
