This week we are focusing on what I call the Intro Intro. Creating a hook for your first sentence, where to place a definition (or three), prevalence rates, a snapshot of the research gap (which you’ll unpack in your literature review), and ‘why the taxpayer should care about this study’, to round it off.

The “Chalice” structure — how to narrow your argument without breaking flow
Clear rules for what belongs in an introduction vs what belongs in a literature review
Practical fixes for the most common issues (e.g., weak openings, vague gap statements, over-detailed summaries)
Alongside it, there is a self-assessment rubric you can apply to your own draft before submission — not to chase perfection, but to sharpen your judgement of quality.
