Vinay Prasad Strikes Trump’s Peace Prize Chances Harder than Trump Struck Venezuela

Operation Warp Speed, Donald Trump’s accelerated mRNA vaccine policy that decisively turned the tide of the pandemic, was very nearly sullied earlier this month by threatening to issue a black box warning against its primary product: mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines.

A black box warning is the FDA’s strongest drug caution. In almost all cases of issuance, immediate, sharp declines in use follow -especially when said warnings involve a risk of death in children. This was exactly the stated intent of Vinay Prasad’s memo, who as chief of CBER has the authority to issue it. It’s important note that there is no evidence to back his claim that covid vaccines carry a risk of death or disability greater than taking too much vitamin A, but there is substantial ideological pressure from the anti-vaccine activists that Prasad shamelessly courts to back such a warning.

But the FDA isn’t supposed to be an ideological agency, right?

Correct. It is supposed to be an evidence-based regulatory body unmoved by superstition, popular opinion, political corruption, or corporate interference. But each day under the current administration, organizational commitment to objectivity wilts under the heat of these forces.

Everything that is uniquely and historically wrong with Trump’s HHS under RFK Jr. stems from stripping multiple institutions of verifiable, unbiased expertise -replacing them with mortifyingly unqualified political appointees.

While this is a devastating state of affairs for our nation’s relationship with reality, this supreme act of self-indulgence should have guaranteed alignment between Trump’s desire for a Nobel Peace Prize, and the logistical means to secure it.

And yet it still went sideways for him.

When you build a political coalition that hinges heavily upon the interests of the aggressively gullible -to the exclusion of the scientifically and mathematically literate… your results will not manifest along logical lines. Irrationality has a tendency to be highly unpredictable.

Case in point: RFK Jr., famously anti-covid vaccine, stated on the record in September that Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in accelerating the availability of mRNA vaccines, but he has simultaneously done everything in his power to eliminate and stigmatize mRNA vaccines. It’s almost as if facts and logic don’t matter to adults who cannot decide if they are more beholden to imaginary beliefs or passionately kissing the ass of the man who lifted them to power, even when the goals of each are irreconcilably opposed.

Someone once coined the phrase “woo-war” to characterize the inevitable clash between zealots of irrationality who should be allies in their commitment to shared delusion, but inevitably square off over arbitrary differences in the direction they seek to take their shared hallucination. The beef between them is quite real, but the evidence supporting their positions is not.

This happens frequently and with great comedic effects in alternative medicine circles, but it has reached terrifying heights of significance as influencers, conspiracy theorists, supplement shills, and predatory attorneys have been appointed to meaningful government positions that were intended for actual scientists and health experts in every prior presidential administration, red or blue. Most of their proclamations simply threaten the health of the public, which is of little concern to the ruling class, but cracks are opening in a coalition of madmen built on a foundation of mist and clouds. As they lob flaming arrows at each other in discordance over fictional narratives about medicine, the conflagration is now burning their boss, who desperately covets a non-FIFA peace prize.

Trump claims to have ended eight wars, but has ended precisely zero as of this writing.

Short of a miracle of eight independent coincidences, he simply isn’t getting an award for publicly insisting that he has stopped wars that continue to rage.

On the other hand, Trump played a critical role in saving millions of lives through the bold action of Operation Light Speed in 2020 that as a physician I still genuinely respect and appreciate to this day. The Nobel committee has awarded prizes for far less than saving lives on a scale that can topple governments and crush economies the way that global pandemics have.

Vinay Prasad’s evidence-free memo that covid vaccines are inherently dangerous casts President Trump’s most significant humanitarian effort as a mass atrocity that sought to murder large swaths of the population through a willful mass-poisoning of children across the world. Not a great look for an upwardly mobile sycophant, but clearly he wants to impress RFK Jr. and citizens who never took biology, more than the President himself.

Let’s do a little math on how many lives Trump saved through his pandemic leadership

COVID-19 vaccination prevented approximately 19.8 million deaths worldwide during the first year of the pandemic, about 3 million of which were American. Because covid is much deadlier to older age cohorts, the number of children estimated to be saved by rapid vaccine rollouts is low, even though it did a great deal to reduce serious illness, myocarditis, and hospitalizations in pediatric populations.

Not bad. Not quite as impressive as 1970 winner, Norman Borlaug, American agronomist and plant pathologist who developed high-yield, disease-resistant wheat to prevent famine estimated to have saved over a billion lives worldwide.

But, it is certainly more impressive than Henry Kissinger’s 1973 Prize for ending the Vietnam War, which actually didn’t end until 2 years after the fact, and only after the collapse of American support for the war and the collapse of the South Vietnamese government itself.

So those are Trump’s very solid assets on lives saved. While I am not an accountant, I know that you also must include liabilities in your ledger when balancing out your totals, so…

We also need to include how many people the President’s decisions have killed

Calm down, I know he didn’t personally kill anyone by his own hand even though he once announced it would be politically insignificant to give it a try; but his executive-order policies in 2025 have killed quite a few people (many of which were children) just as his pandemic policies saved lives in 2020.

Trump rolled out draconian cuts to US-sponsored humanitarian aid across the board immediately after taking office. The activities of organizations responsible for providing food and medicine to impoverished nations were frozen, staff fired, budgets eliminated. USAID, PEPFAR, CDC-run surveillance and response for TB, malaria, and many flavors of diarrhea (don’t laugh, it kills hundreds of thousands kids per year via several pathogens) were abruptly terminated. US contributions to GAVI, the World Food Programme, Global Fund, and UNICEF ceased. Food produced specifically for these programs was deemed better off rotting in American warehouses than in the bellies of hungry children. Medicines and vaccines were no longer sent from the richest nation on Earth to those it had promised to help.

People started dying. Immediately. Mostly children. Starvation and water-borne illnesses end lives within days and not in humane ways that most Americans have ever seen. Those who no longer received medicine for infections like HIV or TB can linger much longer, but rest assured they have started dying off as well.

Estimates sit at around 750,000 dead in 2025 -nearly 500,000 of which are children. Kids are much more resistant to covid, but quite a bit more susceptible to diarrhea, malnutrition, and AIDS than adults, and Trump took away the things they needed to continue to scrape out an incredibly meager existence as human beings living in extremis.

This is a unique presidential legacy. Trump’s memorial could very well be a mausoleum on the National Mall.

But those programs were prohibitively expensive, right? We need that money to balance the budget?

The 2025 US federal budget is approximately $6.7 trillion. Cuts made to these programs collectively saved ~$25-40 Billion, or 0.4–0.6% of the total budget.

The US national debt is $38.6 trillion dollars. These cuts would have reduced our debt by one tenth of 1%, but in fact they were not applied to debt reduction, as the debt has grown by $2.2T, higher than the yearly annual average under Biden (~$1.5+ trillion per year), despite the absence of COVID-era emergency spending.

The cost of these programs was about $58 per year per middle-class taxpayer. Much less than 1% of anyone’s federal tax burden. Much less than anyone pays at Chik-fil-A or drops into their church collection plate in the same window of time, and it bought a lot more charity.

In addition to keeping mostly children from dying, these programs bought the US the good will and thanks of the citizens of the 130 countries served, which is arguably just as valuable as just doing it to cheaply save people from dying. In retreating from our longtime humanitarian commitments, we now face a generation of foreign resentment that will cultivate pockets of terrorism from generalized hatred of America. Dead kids have a way leaving a permanent mark on their parents.

Cutting these programs did nothing to save us money in any conceivable metric, and everything to hurt our standing in the international community, while allowing many to suffer and die -now and for years to come.

For a fraction of 1% of the federal budget (close to what we paid Argentina to undercut American soybean farmers and cattle ranchers), the US dismantled programs that prevented over a million deaths per year. These were one of the United States’ most effective soft-power tools, converting money into trust, legitimacy, and influence. Abruptly limiting or terminating this support didn’t just cost lives; it burned reputation capital that took decades to build.

Seems like a negative balance, but hey, most of the casualties aren’t American kids, so they don’t count as much, right? Because America first? That mentality is unlikely to impress anyone in Oslo.

But wait… there’s more!

If we circle back to assume that Vinay Prasad was right (even though he’s not) that covid vaccines are dangerous and kill more kids than they save to deserve a black box warning (but they absolutely do not), well… it’s just blood red all the way down.

This new perspective does nothing to change the facts above on international casualties caused by Trump’s elimination of humanitarian aide, but it adds an ominously unquantifiable number of fictional pediatric covid vaccine deaths to the liability column. The president already had a big negative tally, so why would a political appointee stigmatize Trump’s crown jewel of beneficence? Like… what the fuck Vinay, don’t you like your government job?

Surely there are other reasons that the President deserves a Nobel Prize, right?

This is an amusingly optimistic take that the MAGA faithful somewhat unthinkingly cling to. As if to say that anyone who deserves a Peace Prize has not just one, but several, completely unrelated reasons to claim it. Absurd in general terms, but even more ridiculous when you assume it of a real-estate developer convicted of multiple counts of fraud, bankrupted a casino, and paid a porn star to have sex with him and be quiet about it. Not exactly the makings of a messiah. Idolatry from people who predominantly belong to a faith that specifically forbids idolatry. But let’s look at parallel qualifications anyway.

If you run a comprehensive search of significant, non-transactional humanitarian works that were planned and/or financed by Donald Trump, you will get a very short list. Operation Warp Speed, and signing a continuance for PEPFAR in 2018 (which he has since throttled into nonexistence in 2025). Sure, he made a handful of discretionary donations to charities through the Trump Foundation… which was later dissolved after findings of gross personal misuse of charitable funds.

There is literally nothing but OWS that Trump can claim as grounds for winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

I wonder when the spell of the MAGA-faithful will lift, because the idiots that Trump appointed to “drain the swamp” are brazenly attacking the the only truly good work he has done. MAGA wants to believe that Trump does no wrong, but Kennedy and Prasad are brazenly spitting in their faces as they dismantle Trump’s one and only shot at being remembered as a humanitarian. Where is the conservative outrage?

Does Trump’s 2020 achievement even matter at this point?

I would argue no.

To openly campaign for an award that honors work towards “fraternity between nations,” after committing a multi-national atrocity by way of a widely-publicized pen stroke is for lack of a better word… insane. Given the fact that Trump’s policies predominantly killed children, it would be better by far to award him a black box warning instead, since that is their intended utility.

Even adding back the lives saved by covid vaccines doesn’t really cancel the damage. And I’m not saying that because Trump didn’t invent said vaccines, or because the lives saved fall short in numbers against those lost -because both are true. There remains an undeniable qualitative difference in this morbid ledger of global life and death:

On the balance beam of justice, a caused death weighs substantially more than a saved life.

If you disagree, consider: if I caused your diabetic child to perish by withholding his insulin for a 0.74% tax rebate, but I also saved three of your neighbor’s kids from a rabid dog, not only would you find me undeserving of accolades… you would very likely hold a serious and undeniably reasonable grudge against me.

Tombstones are heavier than uninterrupted lives.

Anti-intellectualism always finds a welcome home in the heart of authoritarianism, and this has been pronounced under Trump, who feels personally attacked whenever he is corrected on matters of fact. There is no meaningful science that emerges from ideological desire, no matter how much public support it garners: reality is not governed by will, passion, or democracy.

A state-controlled disconnect with objectivity harms us all, but in this particular case -it harmed Donald Trump as well. The only remaining path open to his securing a Nobel Peace Prize is to invade and conquer Norway. But don’t tell him I said that, because he may take it as sincere advice.
