Meanings: We chose Resistor for the name of this newsletter
The meaning of RESISTOR is a device that has electrical resistance and is used in an electric circuit for protection, operation, or current control. We see our job as an opportunity to offer protection to the people who join us. To operate together and to keep the energy flowing to ensure we can stand up to this government.
A resister is one who resists, stands firm against something, refuses compliance, or withstands temptation. A resister may also be a coating that protects a surface during some processes. Related words are resist, resists, resisted, resisting, resistible, resistibility, and resistibly. Resister appears in the late fourteenth century from the Old French word resister, meaning hold out against.
We are both… a resistor that allows the current to connect the dots and one who resists.
When we stand up together, WE can MAKE a DIFFERENCE. They can only win if we give up!

*** I went to the Alberta Government Consultation on AI Data Centres in Red Water tonight (Thursday) Most of the people who showed up were not in favour of the Data Centres, despite government assurances that they had studied all the problems that had arisen in other jurisdictions that had them. The one big point is that they claim to do consultations yet they had negotiated for 2 and half years with Meta re: the Sturgeon Data Centre and we only heard about it on July 8th the same day that they broke ground. People are not happy and Albertans are waking up! You are not alone.

The Senate reviews legislation passed by the House of Commons.
Abolishing the Senate would again require Constitutional amendments with BROAD Provincial agreement.
Senate reform has been debated in Canada for decades.
There is NO consensus among provinces on what should replace it.
The current Alberta Senators are not necessarily Liberal or Conservative - they belong to different groups or are independent.

Immigration is a shared federal-provincial responsibility under the Constitution.
Alberta already helps select immigrants through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program: In 2024 and early 2025, the AAIP will consider an invitation to apply based on the following priorities:
Accelerated Tech Pathway
Law Enforcement Pathway
Priority sectors, such as construction, agriculture, and aviation
Permanent Residents already pay taxes and are permanent members of Canadian society.
Temporary Foreign Workers and International Students also contribute through taxes, tuition, and labour.
Changes could affect employers already facing labour shortages. (See the ** document at the end if you are an employer on how to deal with this.)
Provinces must still operate within the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Some publicly funded services are already restricted based on immigration status.

Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents would be affected under this proposal
They have extended the time from 5 years to 6 years to be eligible for PR status.
There has been a reduction in the number of people eligible for immigration status by the Federal Government.
Temporary Foreign Workers often work and pay taxes before qualifying for Social Programs.
Delayed eligibility could affect those experiencing hardship.
Any new law would need to meet constitutional and human rights requirements.
Eligibility rules are already in place for these programs.

Only Canadian Citizens are legally allowed to vote.
Alberta voters already have to prove their identity before voting.
This proposal would add additional proof of citizenship requirements.
Some supporters argue it strengthens election integrity = We already have this!
Critics question whether it creates unnecessary barriers for eligible voters. (This will also affect those regarding healthcare - as their # will have to appear on their driver’s license starting July 1, 2026.)
Think of homeless citizens who don’t have proper ID.

They can no longer have voters vouch for them.

Superior Court Judges are currently appointed by the Federal Government
Provinces already appoint many of the lower court judges.
Provinces have a committee to appoint judges to the King’s Court - thus they have a say in who gets appointed.
Changing the appointment process would require a constitutional amendment.
It will increase political influence over the judiciary.

Since 1990, the West has had 6/24 Supreme Court Judges - Alberta has had 5 of them. So, 25% of Federal Supreme Court judges came from the West, BC, and Alberta.
