Part One: Religious Habits

I’m going to share artworks and extra material from my 2022 solo show, Grief House. Each subject is related to the wilderness of grief, and all that might be found at the boundaries of that exploration. Today I’m sharing a taste of the Religious Habit.

Hear the poem below:

Religious Habit

by Abigail Platter

Formed in the Wilderness

Dawned as a crown

Among the fickle

Feckless messes

Matted up peacocks

Butter’d up headdresses

You know the stakes

And just where to place them

Lines in the dirt

Right where it hurts

Right where you can break them

Pinkies out no room for doubt

Tail feather fanning

Frothing at the mouth

It’s an Eye for an eye

Pig snout to the sky

It’s a pig sty

It’s a Big surprise

They’ve made a monument

And it’s a lie

Formed in the Wilderness

Dawned as a crown

The Religious Habit

Baptized and drowned

They say Eye Witness

A boldface account

I say animal hitlist

Knees hit the ground

I Hear the prayers

Hyenas laugh too

Does heaven tear open

For a sinner like you?
