Abi Awomosu · How Not To Use AI

You build it, and feel the grain.

THE #HOWNOTTOUSEAI CHALLENGE

WEEK 2 · THE SOVEREIGN EARReceive before you transmit.

Day 1 you listened. Day 2 you looked. Day 3 you tasted. All of it on an archive that couldn’t answer back. Today you build something and send it somewhere alive.

Then you run your original question alongside it, into the same tool, on the same afternoon — and compare.

Today’s session:

  • Why your surveys and your prompts fail in exactly the same way — and what that means for both.

  • Five ways a question shuts before you’ve asked it. You’ll recognise all of them, probably in your own work.

  • The five layers where a decision actually happens — and why interviews turn up at layer four and analytics at layer five, long after it’s over.

  • A live coach in your browser that opens your own question with you, naming the exact words closing it. Nothing to install.

  • The control experiment. Your original question and your commission, same tool, same afternoon. The gap between them is the assignment.

You walk out with a brief somebody else could use without you in the room, two research returns, and your own command habit named in the exact words you actually type.

Three days of receiving. Today the crossing.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about prompting your way around a model’s bias: there’s a ceiling, and you hit it faster than you’d think.

You’ve spent the week finding ways around the defaults. Living language. Register changes. Turns instead of one-shots. All of it works, and all of it is still you and the model, in a room, negotiating.

The correction isn’t a better prompt. It’s pointing the thing at real people who actually said something.

Right now that mostly means the internet — the unsolicited half, where people speak without an audience they’re managing. But it isn’t only the internet. It works on your support tickets. Your call recordings. Your reviews. The emails nobody has read properly. Anywhere a real person expressed something without being asked to.

The brief is how you point it.
