This week note covers the weeks of 8th–21st December.
- After a 10 week long streak of writing week notes, I missed writing one last weekend. But that’s okay because …
- It was my birthday last week! I’m pretty much middle-aged now, so it’s one less thing to worry about anymore.
- My wife organized a day-long birthday food festival for our family. We had all delectable things to eat that we usually don’t. I cut three cakes and all of them were delicious. Afterward, we went to Naturals to get some icecream with our 3yo A.
- The next day we went shopping, and I got myself some funky purple.aa sneakers. Then we headed to the much-talked-about Lavonne Ice Cream Kitchen by the Lavonne café folks. Unfortunately, the hype is not justified, and I found the icecream pretty okayish.
- Afterward, we huddled in the cold and watched the Wake Up Dead Man movie on the TV. I liked the mystery and the acting, but found it too fast-paced compared to the prequels.
- Today we had a lunch party with my friends at Kuuraku. Lots of yakitori, sushi and mochi was consumed, topped with cakes and icecream. Definitely recommended if you are into Japanese food.
- I was able to hit an average of 9000 steps per day this week after a gap of many months. My recovery from the burnout has been slow but I’m happy to able to be more physically active again.
- I solved more Advent of Code 2025 puzzles in Janet, and wrote another post about it. However, I got stuck on the day 9 puzzle. Computational Geometry has always been one of my weak points. I got caught up in other things, but I do intend to come back to the puzzles next week.
- The other “things” I got caught up is working on my website. Attending the last IndieWebClub Bangalore meeting inspired me to add a list of similar and disparate posts to the footers of all my posts. I used the same TF-IDF algorithm that I used earlier for sorting Miniflux posts by similarity, working with the entire post texts this time. It worked perfectly. You can see it in action right below. However, my current implementation is quite inefficient and consumes multiple GBs of memory. I’ll get to fixing it soon.
- Another feature that I added to the website is to load the comments on the posts lazily. Some of the posts have scores of comments, and since they used to be rendered within the post pages, the page load time increased by as much as 2x compared to without comments. Now the comments are rendered in separate pages of their own, and loaded on demand, leading to much faster page loads.
- I started rewatching Interior Chinatown this week. I watched it a year back but in great hurry, so I didn’t get to appreciate it well. This time I’m taking it slow.
