A Lonely Walk
A Lonely Walk
  • Today is an unusually cold day in Bengaluru, caused by the Cyclone Ditwah. I have not seen such a foggy and misty day here in over a decade. Wife and I got all wrapped up in thick jackets and went for a walk in the fog. It was wonderful!
  • I wanted to have some hot chocolate after the walk but recently I’ve grown intolerant to dairy 😭. I suppose I’ll try out a plant-based milk.
  • I had an eye infection this week, don’t know how I got it. To prevent my family from catching it, I wore sunglasses through the day. It was uncomfortable, but I was told I looked pretty cool in the video calls I had with my colleagues. 😎
  • Wife and I took out our 3yo A to the Ink and Oak bookstore/café one evening. It is a newly opened store that we had been eyeing for a while. They have decent collection of books and confectioneries, but not amazing at either. I browsed through the books but didn’t find anything I liked enough to buy for myself but we got A a coloring book.
  • feed-repeat has been repeating well. I added a new feature to it to limit the number of entries per domain per day so that the feed is not overrun by links from a single domain. I’m planning to open-source it so I spent some time polishing the documentation.
  • On that note, I upgraded all my Haskell projects to GHC 9.10.3. I keep all my projects pinned to the same nixpkgs version so that the libraries are reused across them, so upgrading the version becomes a grand chore. I had to rebuild GHC and all libraries, so it took a while. I cleaned up over 50 GB of data from the old version after upgrading!
  • The GHC upgrade now allows me to build static binaries for Haskell projects for both X86 and ARM architectures. I tried it out on feed-repeat but ran into some weird linking issues. Once I figure all this out, I plan to push my code to Nixkell, the Nix-for-Haskell framework of my choice, as well as to write a blog post about it.
  • I added a new blogroll of my favourite programming blogs to my website. This was mostly so that I could repeat the combined blogroll feed through feed-repeat and read all their posts over-and-over again. I had to figure out multiple issues with parsing the upstream feeds, which is unexpected as the authors are programmers.
  • We had a birthday party for Ankur with cakes, mixtures and Meghna’s biryani, and a long discussion about books and TV shows. I borrowed a hardbound edition of The Books of Earthsea from Ankur, which is next on my reading list.
  • Talking about media, I started reading the One Punch Man manga after being continuously disappointed by the latest season of the anime. Wife and I are also slowly watching the first season of The Apothecary Diaries.
  • Some interesting links for this week:
