Taking space, or stonewalling?

I get asked about the frustration of “getting the silent treatment” a lot but this week I want to flip it around. Not what to do when they go quiet on you, but what your own silence might be saying.

Here’s the slightly uncomfortable truth. From the outside, “I need space” and the silent treatment look basically identical. Same closed mouth, same dramatic turned back. But under the hood they’re doing completely opposite jobs, and let’s be honest, most of us have pulled both without ever clocking the difference.

Here’s the part that sucks. Sometimes “I just need space” is really withdrawal with an agenda, a way to make the other person feel the thing we won’t say out loud. We’re not yelling, we’re punishing with silence, and half the time we can’t even see we’re doing it.

And here’s the good news. The fix is tiny. Healthy space and stonewalling are separated by a single sentence. Stonewalling is silence with no clarity, no timeline, and no door left cracked open. Healthy space says itself out loud:

“I’m too flooded to do this well right now. I need a little time, and I’ll come back when I can be respectful about it.”

Same exact need for space, but one leaves them out in the cold and the other hands them a blanket. One sentence, and that’s the whole difference.

And if you still want information on what to do if you’re the receiver, not the giver, this episode covers what to do when you’re the one on the receiving end:

And because the braver work is looking at our own patterns (ugh, I know), I made you a self-check for telling space apart from stonewalling, with the repair sentence built right in. Get the worksheet below!

And hey, if you want more of this, it’s exactly the kind of thing we get into every week inside the One Love Collective, my paid community here on Substack. That’s where the live Q&As, Therapy-to-Go Bundles and daily chats happen, and where the whole crew hangs out. The door’s always open if you’d like to come in.
