As the days grow shorter, and the sun takes its sweet time rising in the wee morning hours, Santa Paula High School students have been lining up outside the campus to pick up their fall class schedules and ID cards. It seems that the days aren’t the only things growing shorter. Summer recesses are as well, with kids heading back to school at least a full two weeks before we Gen-X slackers did back in the day. School starts August 12, and local law enforcement is reminding everyone to keep an eye out for the kiddies toodling to and from school.
SANTA PAULA
Cruise Night: Friday, August 7, 5:00 – 7:00 PM
Tonight marks Santa Paula’s monthly Cruise Night event celebrating classic (pre-1980) cars and car culture. Main Street will be closed between 8th and 10th Streets to allow for free-flowing pedestrian traffic and live music.
Although the city all but rolls up the sidewalks by 7:00 PM, the Fermentation House at the corner of 8th and Main will serve as Party Central until 10:00 PM, with food trucks, a night market, and DJs spinning the tunes.
At the other end of Main Street, Parque 1055 will be offering $10 Nitro Espresso Martinis from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Yes, you read that right: $10!
PIRU
Corazón de Piru: Friday, August 7
Live music with Manny. If you haven’t seen him perform yet, do yourself a favor and go check it out. The music is fantastic, and it’s a great time to relax and have fun in a cozy setting with Piru locals. Top off the evening with Heritage Valley wines and dinner ordered straight from the Mountain View Inn.
Newhall Mansion Open House: Saturday, August 8, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
With its recent transfer to private ownership, the Newhall Mansion is experiencing a renaissance, not only as a wedding and events venue, but as a community space for residents and visitors alike to explore the history of Piru and Rancho Camulos.
This open house, featuring self-guided tours of the house and grounds, is ideal for anyone looking to book the space for an event or simply learn about its history. While you’re in town, be sure to check out the Mountain View Inn for brunch or dinner. The food — and the generosity — will leave you gobsmacked.
By investing in the area’s history, owners Ken and Betty-Lou Wiseman are helping preserve Piru’s future, ensuring that its distinctive character remains intact for everyone to enjoy.
From The 805 Diary Archives: The mansion was built between 1886 and 1890 by Christian publisher and entrepreneur, David C. Cook. Cook also built the original incarnation of the Mountain View Inn and the local Methodist church. Oh, and in his spare time, he managed one hell of a side gig: founding the town of Piru.
Cook was initially drawn to the Rancho Camulos area north of Los Angeles after reading the novel Ramona, written by Helen Hunt Jackson and set in the rancho.
