Dee O. Armstrong · The 805 Diary

Sometime during the thick of the pandemic, I realized it had been a while since I'd spoken with my dad. When we finally connected by phone, the conversation drifted, as it tends to do, into the entertainment world and what movies we’d been watching.

Like millions of others, we were stuck at home with our streaming subscriptions. My husband, Dale, and I had already binged The Tiger King (and subsequently jumped into the shower to wash off the ick), and Oscar season was well past, so it was down to pure fun: B- and monster movies. We compared our viewing lists:

—Anything with a shark or sharks. Check.
—King Kong and Godzilla. Check.
—More sharks, with hapless victims stuck at sea? Cool, cool.

When we tallied it all up, we had watched the. exact. same. movies. Without having compared notes beforehand.

I don’t know if a love of B-movies is genetic or not, but given my father’s and my proclivities, I think a case can be made.

Here’s to always being my father’s daughter.

And Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who’ve passed along their quirks and passions to their kids.
