Les Blythe · The Writer's Digital Catalyst

Let’s get this out of the way right up front - most writers are using AI all wrong - period.

They’re churning out bland “AI Slop” that nobody wants to read.

If that’s you - STOP immediately.

If you’re writing for your own brand - STOP, you’re destroying any chance of readers engaging with you or trusting you.

If you’re writing for a client's brand, STOP - you’re killing their business.

If you're churning out garbage to fill web pages trying to game Google and your SEO, STOP - you’re wasting your time. 86% of top-ranking Google search results are written by humans.

Fact: People recognise AI writing immediately, they disengage with it instantly - they scroll away never to return.

The AI Slop bubble has well and truly burst, and that’s a good thing!

With all of that said, let’s not write AI off quite yet - provided you play to its (many) strengths.

And, I’m going to show you how to do just that right now.

You’ll also get your hands on my writing system that slashes your workload using AI, without losing your human voice.

Be prepared to become the most AI-savvy writer in the room!

There are some things that AI does incredibly well, such as:

  1. Overcoming “The Blank Page”

AI is the ultimate cure for writer’s block. It can provide 10 different ways to start an article or post, giving you that “spark” of inspiration to keep moving.

  2. Brainstorming
Do you ever wish you had a writing buddy or group on hand to brainstorm ideas with? Now you have one right in front of you that has already read more books than anyone else you’ve ever met.

  3. Outlining
AI can provide a working outline based on your topic and audience in seconds. Really useful and a big time saver.

  4. Draft Zero
Use AI to produce a working first draft of a whole article instantly. Kill yet another huge timesuck and maintain your momentum.

  5. Summarizing research

LLMs (Large Language Models) are good at synthesising information and then paraphrasing it. You can ask ChatGPT to summarise your research notes for you so that the most important points are all covered.

  6. Proofreading

In an ideal world, we would hire copy editors, but who can afford that?

You can ask AI to proofread your work, but it’s important to specify what type of grammatical structure you want, as well as the intended audience

  7. Automating Formatting

AI can take a messy draft and instantly format it to specific industry standards, whether it’s a Standard Manuscript Format for publishers or a document such as a case study or white paper.

  8. Writing Emails
Concise emails are important for clear communication, but they can also be a chore. Instead of writing the first draft of emails yourself, you can have AI compose them for you. Specify how long you want them to be; AI can be a little “wordy” when it generates text. Always edit and humanize before sending.

  9. Headlines
Write your own headline first. Then ask AI to give you 20 or more alternatives based on your headline and other contextual information you feed in. I often find the headline I end up using is a combination of my original headline and inspiration from what AI spits out.

    and finally…

  10. Repurposing existing content
This is a key strategy in content marketing. Typically, this involves rewriting, or at least rewording, content that’s already written. Because this is more mechanical than writing something original from scratch, it’s an ideal task for an AI writing assistant.

Honestly, since I’ve learned how to use AI intelligently, my writing life has changed completely.

I’m a more relaxed and less overworked writer.

And that’s definitely a good thing!

“So Les, what are the most important steps I can take to up my writing game without producing garbage that doesn’t connect with my readers?”

I’m glad you asked.

Here are 3:

  1. Understand how AI actually “writes.”
How many of you have taken the time to understand how AI formulates a sentence, a paragraph, a whole page? Come on now, be honest. It might surprise you to know that AI doesn’t write at all. It’s a guessing machine; it guesses, based on probability, the word that comes next. A good writer doesn’t guess! Once you understand the basic mechanics of AI and see it for what it truly is, it becomes a lot less scary.

  2. Deploy my AI writing framework (link below)
AI is a logical machine. Therefore, to get the best from it, you need to have a logical (repeatable) framework to feed it. I’m not talking about throwing random, half-assed prompts at it. I’m talking about a framework that feeds the human (you) into the machine in the right place and exploits the power of AI strategically, for maximum return.

  3. Edit and humanize
If you’ve ever sent out a piece of AI content without a thorough edit, you’re an idiot. I’m not here to sugarcoat it. Why would you do that? You may as well not have written the piece in the first place. In fact, you’ve just moved the needle in a negative direction and are well on the way to destroying your reputation completely! (tough love).

Savvy writers who are winning understand how to use AI to do the grunt work, using a framework that strictly controls the output. They never take AI’s word for it and they edit and humanize their content mercilessly.
