It's something that still baffles 52-yr old me. Why would a man say this to his child?
My father passed away when I was 20, so I never got to ask him. Two things became clear over time, however: it was some lame attempt to help ‘make me a man’ somehow, and it definitely didn't work. I doubled-down on my ‘dream world,’ in fact… dedicating my life to create, imagine, daydream, and build an entire paracosm in my head.
Paracosm. I learned that word very late in life and I love it. It's defined as a detailed and complex fantasy world created in one's mind, complete with a rich history, languages, geography, and populated with creatures and characters. Think George Lucas and Star Wars, Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek, J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle Earth, etc.
The name for mine is #10kWorlds and though I've never written more than a handful of song lyrics and poetry in my younger years, I plan to use this substack to discuss and develop my very own dream world with a growing community.
