This is Sporadic Thoughts, short little one-two paragraph pieces I release fairly regularly, whenever an idea for one pops into my head.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what true greatness looks like.

In that clip, DK Metcalf, a wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, catches a touchdown. Yeah, and that’s cool and all, but the real gem comes in the celebration.

DK Metcalf literally learned sign language just so he could taunt people.

He goes after Ahkello Witherspoon here, artfully signing “#44 is my son” after scoring on Witherspoon (#44). This isn’t petty, this is awesome. He gets to have his satisfaction and make fun of opposing cornerbacks, and not get penalized for it. All while learning sign language. And I’m not an ASL expert, but that my son gesture was smooth. (In the video, he actually only signs “my son”, but I have watched another, uncut clip - watch it here and watch him before the camera cuts to him- that shows him signing #44.)

Please, more athletes do this. It avoids penalties, teaches people about ASL, and it’s just awesome. It’s all awesome! Teaching yourself/learning ASL is awesome! Looking cool is awesome. DK Metcalf is awesome.

If you, like me, now feel obligated to give DK Metcalf money, here is a link to buy his jersey. Also, if you, also like me, now want to learn ASL to quietly vanquish your enemies, Sign Language 101 (paid), Lifeprint.com, and the official ASL App (both free) are great recourses.
