Welcome to THE WEEKENDER, your weekly dispatch full of ~Saturday spirit~! I fill you in briefly on the week, share a few Little Luxuries that make the mundane feel special and save the best for last with some Brain Food to mull over, expand your horizons, or discuss with your friends over a cappuccino. There are usually lots of links and pictures which perhaps will get clipped if you’re reading in your inbox— click here to read in browser!
Happy Saturday! I’ve been a little glum this month, so I’m trying to say yes to more and put myself out there for new experiences a bit more. I was definitely successful at that this week!
Small wins from my week:
I got to go to Becca Freeman and Olivia Muenter’s very fun Bad On Paper x Sol de Janeiro summer book club kick off event! It was at a cool bar in NYC and was probably the best brand/press event I’ve ever been to— Jo Piazza gave an awesome short speech on her latest book and I geeked out over being in the same room as so many authors whose books I’ve loved. I don’t do “influencer-y” things often, or take the train into the city unless I have to— but this fun event made me want to reconsider both of those world views…
Portugal won its second World Cup game 5-0! LFG!!!! I got my Iran drip on for the Iran Egypt game.
Last night was one of my favorite events of the year: the annual “Thrilla in Camilla,” where the FDNY boxing club hosts a fundraiser at St. Camillus Church in Rockaway Beach. It’s sort of like a big tailgate in the church parking lot and I look forward to it every year!
Let’s get into some fun weekend fluff, shall we?
LOTS of summer sales afoot— Anthropologie is doing a pretty good 20% off apparel, accessories, shoes, beauty, home, and furniture with code ANTHRO20. If it were me, I’d be using it on a jelly beach tote or more-handsome-than-your-average cooler, but we all know I am beach-obsessed.
My beloved espadrilles that I won’t shut up about are also 30% off. I keep trying to tell you that every step is so squishy it’s like walking on a trampoline!
Another great sale: Margaux’s Summer Archive Sale. I just got my first pair of Margaux sandals and I won’t stop raving about them, so know that the hype you may hear about the brand is justified… lots of good options for people who work in-person in an office!
Loeffler Randall’s summer sale is bangin’— the beach totes are 30% off, and so are fun flip flops and a perfect crochet dress.
I wore this navy blue bandana print cardigan with a great white mini dress (60% off?!) to the Bad on Paper x Sol de Janeiro event this week and it’s one of those pieces you get lots of compliments on and you know you’ll rock for a very long time. Honestly, surprised to see it on major clearance over at J. Crew, down from $150 to almost $20…
I dropped my summer beach read round up! Over 40 beach reads to add to your TBR, whether you’re going on a summer vacation or just plopped on your porch or patio at home.
Kate Citron wrote a great post on boundaries with freelance clients— though honestly, it could just be general guidance on boundaries at work. I have a REALLY hard time with this, and I keep choosing sub 15 person early stage start-ups to work at, basically ensuring any past boundary setting wounds from my time as a founder never fully scab over and instead get picked at on a daily basis for the rest of time…
I’m willing and ready to enter negotiation here.
Charlotte Palermino’s recent newsletter reminded me of George Orwell’s “Why I Write”— it’s a perfect essay. Read it and reignite whatever might have sputtered out within.
This week I wrote about creative projects… specifically, when it’s time to turn that creative passion of yours into a business— and when to leave it alone and enjoy it as a hobby!
Art rocks.
