The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) adjusts its mirrors using an intricate system of precision actuators—tiny motors that can move and reshape the mirrors with nanometer accuracy. This is a visual grouping of five galaxies located about 290 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. NASA’s JWST was able to show shock waves, tidal tails, and more astonishing details about these distant galaxies. Four of the five galaxies in Stephan’s Quintet regularly interact with each other, creating the stunning display we see here. [NASA/ESA/CSA/STScI]
The #NASAWebb is one of the most ambitious and expensive space science projects ever undertaken — and it was made possible through decades of U.S. government support, mainly via #NASA with contributions from international partners.
